American Idol 2011 Hollywood Solo - Casey Abrams "Georgia on My Mind"

During Hollywood Week, American Idol Season 10's Casey Abrams gave one of his coolest performances EVER! In 2003, Rolling Stone Magazine named "Georgia on My Mind" the 44th greatest song of all time.

"Georgia on My Mind" is a song written in 1930 by Hoagy Carmichael (music) and Stuart Gorrell (lyrics). It is the official state song of the U.S. state of Georgia. Gorrell wrote the lyrics for Hoagy's sister, Georgia Carmichael. However, the lyrics of the song are ambiguous enough to refer either to the state or to a woman named "Georgia". Carmichael's 1965 autobiography, Sometimes I Wonder, records the origin: a friend, saxophonist and bandleader Frankie Trumbauer, suggested: "Why don't you write a song called 'Georgia?' Nobody lost much writing about the South." Thus, the song is universally believed to have been written about the state.

The song was first recorded on September 15, 1930 in New York by Hoagy Carmichael and His Orchestra with Bix Beiderbecke on muted cornet and Hoagy Carmichael on vocals. The recording was part of Bix Beiderbecke's last recording session. The recording was released as Victor 23013 with "One Night in Havana".

Frankie Trumbauer had the first major hit recording in 1931 when his recording made the top ten on the charts. Trumbauer had suggested that Carmichael compose the song.

Ray Charles, a native of Georgia, recorded it in 1960 on the album The Genius Hits the Road. It became Georgia's state song in 1979. Inspired by this blues version, Willie Nelson formally introduced the song to country audiences in 1978 as a #1 Country/Western hit.

American Idol exit Q&A: Pia Toscano tears up while discussing her 'amazing memories' from the show -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

American Idol Season 10 exit Question & Answer: Pia Toscano tears up while discussing her 'amazing memories' from the show -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO
by John Young

An emotional Pia Toscano, the 22-year-old New Yorker who was shockingly eliminated from American Idol Thursday night, said she had a feeling bad news might be coming her way. “Last night I said, ‘Maybe I might be in the bottom three tomorrow,’” Toscano told EW in a backstage interview an hour after the show. “And I was okay with that because everything happens for a reason. You just have to stay up about it and know that there’s amazing things to come.” Toscano became teary-eyed while reflecting upon her truncated Idol experience. “I have lots of amazing memories,” she said. “The people that I met, [and] doing things that I didn’t think I could do. Every single one of [the contestants] is just the most classy, standout person.”

Toscano, who revealed that she would have sung “Somewhere” from West Side Story next week, ended her stint on Idol by performing The Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand By You” — the song that pushed her into the final Top 13. “I couldn’t even breathe at that moment,” said Toscano, “so the fact that I could get anything out was a miracle. I put every emotion I had into it, and I wanted to finish with the song that got me here.”

AINOW's Live Blog: Conference Call With Thia Megia & Naima Adedapo plus Good Day LA and MY Fox Morning After Interviews

After the double elimination of Thia Megia and Naima Adedapo on American Idol Season 10, the two female finalists did a round of interviews. Here is AINOW's Live Blog: Conference Call With Thia and Naima.

Thia Megia was asked about her previous experience performing. She spoke about when she was 5 and she was at a birthday party and got up on a coffee table and sung for her family. That's when she realized her passion for singing.

Thia didn't know what to expect for the eliminations, so she had a mixture of emotions before getting up on stage. "Everyone else is so incredible, you prepare yourself for whatever happens."

Thia had to do about 4 hours of school everyday. She felt that she didn't really get enough rehearsal time because of it. But it was also an advantage, because school was an escape from stress. And she had the opportunity to bond with the other minors.

Thia didn't have a favorite part of the competition - she enjoyed every part of it! She is going to miss the vocal coaches. She says she has grown so much as an artist and a person.

Thia was asked if the girls were concerned about going home first, considering that happened last season. She said that there was a little concern because the girls knew that the Idol audience is more female so their votes would go to the guys.

When asked what artists Thia would like to work with, she said Adele and Jason Mraz. She also enjoys Billie Holiday.

Thia regrets not doing more upbeat songs. However, she doesn't regret her last song, because she dedicated it to her big brother. She doesn't want "to come off as just a ballad singer."

Thia felt a bit devastated last night, but she knows that things happen for a reason and this is not the end of the road for her.

She's looking forward to being able to sing songs that she really wants to do on the tour. One song she wishes she could have sung is "Chasing Pavements" by Adele.

Thia is very excited about the future!

And now to Naima...

Naima Adedapo was asked about how she consoled Lauren because she was a bit of a mother figure to Lauren. Naima was concerned for Lauren because Lauren is so attached to Thia. But they will reunite, so she's not worried.

One of her favorite parts of the competition was the shopping! She got such a kick out of it, especially when items weren't expensive and she could get a lot of stuff for the money. Her stylist really knew her style.

Naima has a strong dance background. She said she was part of many dance troupes. She did hip hop and African Dance. She was a part of many African dance companies in Milwaukee. She also studied dance in college.

Naima is a 4th generation entertainer. She said that Chicago is rich with culture and the community that her mother kept her around growing up was all artists. She thinks that was the early shaping of her artistry.

She really wanted to show every piece of herself and show something different every time. She has really strong roots in Reggae, so that's why she did it. Some people were concerned, but she stays true to herself. She has no regrets about anything she has done on the show and was happy to be able to show that side of herself.

She thinks she struck people in a "different kind of way." It was hard for people to place her in a certain category, which may have made it hard for people to vote for her.

American Idol's Scotty McCreery Sings “Swingin'" on the Top 7 Show

American Idol Season 10's own 'Country Idol' Scotty McCreery performs "Swingin'" by LeAnn Rimes. The Top 7 were given 'Songs of the 21st Century' as tonight's theme. "Scotty is doing what he does, cuz that's what he does. But what happens on a show like this, people (the voters) can become complacent. And that's a little bit of a danger," said producer Jimmy Iovine. He wants Scotty to mix it up a bit. All of the other contestants have sung multiple genres to show off their range, but Scotty has stuck firmly to Country music. "Jimmy said to bring some life to it, kinda give it a Rocker feel," said Scotty. Let's hope Scotty can keep the non-Country fans interested and voting for him!

So, what do the other Idols think of Scotty McCreery? They all tease Scotty about holding his microphone like a flute, and tease him about his accent.

Scotty struts down the stairs with his crazy confidence. The song came off a little bit karaoke and corny. Scotty has almost become a caricature of himself with the dancing eyebrows. As always, a strong vocal performance. And as always, the audience loves them some Scotty! Steven Tyler said, "Scotty, I love you. I love your voice. I would love it if you just boot scooted a little more, and sashayed around. But I liked it. It's good." Jennifer Lopez praised, "I love your story telling quality you have to singing. I'm just not sure that, at this point of the competition, were getting down to the wire, and it's time to pull out the big guns. Pushing past your comfort zone a little bit, and doing something that's really exciting. You had a decade of music to choose from, and I felt we were expecting more from Scotty. You know I love you." Randy Jackson criticized, "At this point in the competition it’s who is really in it to win it. And every time up there, with the 6, 7 weeks - whatever's left in this competition, you gotta bring it really hard. To me, that was so safe, it was actually kinda boring to me. I love you, but, with this amount of songs, there could have been a better song for you to sing."

American Idol's James Durbin Sings “Uprising” on the Top 7 Show

American Idol Season 10's Rocker James Durbin sings “Uprising” by Muse on the Top 7 Show. The theme for tonight was 'Songs from the 21st Century'. James choose this Muse song "because up until this point, I haven't gotten the chance to show that I can be contemporary." James had a very strong "post-apocalyptic, protest" vision for this song.

What do James Durbin's fellow contestants have to say about him? "James Durbin is the Rocker of the group," says Casey Abrams. The kids go on to josh about James' Rocker hand movements, his 'tail' and his high-pitched back bends.

Once again, this is not American Idol, but a James Durbin-headlining arena concert! James enters the darkened stage with a drum corp, dressed very dramatically in an old-fashioned black military coat with epaulets and a black cane. (I'd wear the outfit/costume to a Steam Punk club.) James commands the stage with amazing confidence and swagger. His vocals are amazing. The high notes are pitch-perfect, and held seemingly forever. The crowd and judges go wild, and the applause goes on and on. Jennifer Lopez raves, "That is going to be theatrically the best performance of the night. And, you're only number 2! That was really amazing. Wow, that was the highest we ever heard you sing ~ or anybody on the show!" Randy Jackson said, "I'm telling you something, Muse is one of my favorite bands. That song "Uprising" is amazing. I hope you follow this direction when you make a record after this, and throw some of your Metal thing into there. It makes you a whole different kind of artist. Dude, you were unbelievable! I think this is gonna be the best performance of the night. I heard tell that Matt Bellamy, the lead singer of Muse, sent you an email saying "when you sing the last chorus, up the octave. I'm gonna challenge you." And Matt, he did it! He slayed it!" Steven Tyler joked, "You stay out of my closet now. Mad Max meets Storm Troopers on Melrose. You'd be surprised how expensive it costs to look this cheap. That was crazy good. You took it up again. It sounds like you're going in a T-Rex direction. I love that about you. I love that you're out of your mind, and beautifully so."
